Chuck Phillips

Creative Director
Cocoon Branding

Chuck Phillips has always been fascinated with ideas and creativity, and it’s this passion for innovation that has helped him push boundaries as creative director at Cocoon Branding. A truly imaginative leader, he lives by the mantra “There is always a better way,” and his dedication to these words is demonstrated by the fact that he always has a folder on hand labelled “Problems to solve.” Most of his time is spent coming up with ideas, whether for personal undertakings or projects for clients, and figuring out solutions to problems we didn’t even know existed yet.

Chuck’s dedication and ability to think outside the box have not gone unnoticed; since he joined Cocoon in 2003, the agency has been recognized by over 100 awards, including prestigious wins from Applied Arts and I.D. Magazine. He is truly an innovative thinker in the fields of brand identity, advertising, sponsorship activation, product design, packaging and interactive development, and has successfully pushed his team to craft more engaging brands.

A few questions with Chuck…

What is the most interesting and exciting project you’ve worked on and why?
That is a hard question. There are a lot of projects that I find exciting. To me it’s more about problem solving and innovation. Anytime I have an opportunity to come up with new ideas, it will always keep me motivated. We did a project for Grant’s Scotch that allowed us to be innovative, and had us drinking a lot of whiskey. That is always a good formula.

If you could have lunch with any person, living or dead, who would it be and why?
One person would be hard to narrow down. I think right now maybe Yves Behar. I am a big fan of what fuseproject is doing right now. I know they are a team of innovators, but I guess if I can only invite one person…

What has been your greatest accomplishment, professionally or personally?
I am not big on holding onto accomplishments; I guess I am on the side that you are as only as good as the last thing you did. So I guess the last thing would have been being placed in the Top 100 Package Designs of 2010 from TheDieline.com, the world’s #1 package design website.

What do you do when you’re not working or volunteering?
I guess that depends on what you consider work. When I am not working on work for Cocoon, I have hundreds of other projects that I would love to be working on. I have been working on a children’s book with my Mom, and I have been working on a concept to aid the recycling of household batteries.
